Patriotism
A short essay
Are you “very” or “extremely proud” to be an American? Before 9/11 both Democrats and Republicans answered this question in the affirmative, with relatively equally high response rates in the 92% or higher category.
Since that time Republicans have increased a bit in their positive response to this question, while Democrats have waned by 20-30 percentage points.
What happened? While it’s a personal reason for every individual, reasons might include the unnecessary wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the appropriation of patriotic symbols by the radical right, and Donald Trump kissing and fondling the American flag.
Recently I suggested that local Democratic party meetings begin with a pledge of allegiance and, by the way I stated, “where is our American flag?” I would love to see a big American flag up by the presenter, and perhaps even a Kansas flag.
This met with a resounding thud, and a few words on why it was a bad idea. Truly a turd in the punch bowl moment.
However, I stand un-phased in my support, and my reasoning follows.
I’m of the opinion that the Democratic party has given away ground, needlessly, on this most fundamental of issues, patriotism. They have committed a major unforced error by letting their overt patriotism melt away and be weaponized by the radical right.
Now when I write about patriotism, I am NOT suggesting nationalism. The two are very easy to separate. A patriot states “America is a great country”. A nationalist states “America is the greatest country”.
Many right wing, tinfoil hat wearing folks spew disinformation and hatred, all while calling themselves patriots. Many right wing fossil-fuel funded organizations also cloak themselves in the flag and usurp the patriot nameplate. In either case they are not, and they tarnish the brand for the rest of us.
The United States has done some wonderful things, and some unfortunate deeds as well. No country is without guilt for prior bad deeds. However, I’m of the opinion that at its core, we are an awesome force for good in this world. Many brave men and women have given their all to ensure we continue to be a shining city upon the hill. While we should always acknowledge past transgressions, and strive to learn from them, there is much to be proud of.
To give you a little background, my past includes a 10 year stint as a Boy Scout leader. My son is an Eagle Scout. Citizenship and patriotism are core to the Boy Scouts, and I am better for it. Flag etiquette and proper flag retirement are traits once learned, not easily forgotten.
Which brings me back to the beginning. In my mind, Democrats needlessly gave away patriotism to the Republicans. Democrats are no less patriotic. Democrats love our country, our people, and our DEMOCRACY. Why on earth would Democrats let MAGA Republicans steal their identities and misappropriate it for twisted authoritarian purposes?
Show your patriotism. Wear it on your sleeves. Shout it out loud.
Don’t give up on us, baby. WE are a great country.
